Always remind yourself that Allah (SWT) is always there to guide you and if you think you are failing at parenting your children in a proper manner refer to Surah Luqman for guidance and remember the following five advices mentioned in the Holy Quran.

1) Teach them every day to worship Allah

And [mention, O Muhammad], when Luqman said to his son while he was instructing him, “O my son, do not associate [anything] with Allah. Indeed, association [with him] is great injustice.” [31:13]

From the above mentioned Ayah of the Surah Luqman, we understand that there is no God but Allah (SWT) and we should not associate anyone with Him in any regard and he is the only true God worthy of our worship. Being a Muslim we should not only remind ourselves that we need to pray to Allah (SWT) but also teach our children to worship The Almighty Allah and seek guidance from him from the early childhood so that our children could learn the true essence of Islam.

2) Tell them the place of parents

And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him, [increasing her] in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination. [31:14]

Parents play a major role in teaching their kids about the different aspects of Islam. Parents have a very honourable standing in the eyes of Islam. Islam teaches us that both the father and mother should be respected and obeyed. It is very necessary for the parents to teach children how to be a better Muslim and how to behave accordingly so that they can also understand why parents should be respected and honoured.

3) Tell them to work hard and trust Allah

[And Luqman said], “O my son, indeed if wrong should be the weight of a mustard seed and should be within a rock or [anywhere] in the heavens or in the earth, Allah will bring it forth. Indeed, Allah is Subtle and Acquainted. [31:16]

We all know that nothing comes easy in this world and one has to work hard and make Dua to Allah (SWT) to be successful in this world. Parents should make their children realize that all the matters of the universe are controlled by Allah (SWT) and he only has the power to give or take away things as He wills. So it is necessary to teach children that we only have the power to work hard and leave the result to Him no matter the circumstances.

4) Tell them to be good and offer prayers

O my son, establish prayer, enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong, and be patient over what befalls you. Indeed, [all] that is of the matters [requiring] determination. [31:17]

Being a parent, one must also teach their children the difference between the right and wrong. It is also important for parents to teach them the virtue of being patient and why Allah (SWT) likes people who are patient and satisfied according to the will of Allah. The important thing the parents should also teach their children is that hardships will befall them but they must believe and pray to Allah (SWT) as all the hardships and easiness comes from him.

5) Being a better individual

If you want your children to become better human beings, it is necessary that they become better Muslims first. By becoming good Muslims, kids will eventually become good believers, good kids, good neighbours, good students, and simply good humans. Teaching kids to pray five times a day, doing good deeds, and following path of righteousness will not only make them successful in this mortal world but also ensure great reward in the hereafter.
