One of the most amazing blessings of Allah (SWT) for a married couple is a birth of a child at their house. Being a Muslim it is necessary for us to follow the teachings of both Allah (SWT) and the prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) so that the basics of the Islam are embedded into the child from the start of the first day of the child’s birth.
Following are the few Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) that every Muslim should follow after the birth of the child.
1. Adhaan (Saying prayer)
When the child is born one of the most important Sunnah every Muslim should follow is to give Adhaan in the right of the baby girl or a boy and Iqama in the left ear of the new born child. Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) use to do the same. According to a Hadith in Tirmidhi:
saw the Prophet (SAW) call the Adhaan in the ear of Al-Hasan Ibn ‘Ali when his mother Fatimah gave birth to him.” (Tirmidhi )
Another Sunnah every Muslim should follow is to chew a date and put in the mouth of the baby girl or a boy so that he/she can swallow it with ease. If the date is not available, honey can be used to put in the mouth of the new born child. It is a custom that this Sunnah is practiced by elders of the house. Aisha (RA) reported that:
“New-born children used to be brought to the Messenger of Allah and he would supplicate for blessings for them, and rub a chewed date upon their palate.” (Muslim)
It is recommended in Islam to give children beautiful names with good meanings. The Prophet Muhammad(P.B.U.H) always use to choose names with beautiful meaning. Muslims can name their child based on the names of Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) companions. Allah (SWT) says in the Quran.
“Call them by [the names of] their fathers; it is more just in the sight of Allah…” (Quran, 33: 5)..
4. Aqeeqa (Before the 7th day)
Aqeeqa is the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad(P.B.U.H) which in easy words is a form of Sadaqah that is performed to protect the new born boy or a girl from evil. It is necessary to give Sadaqah of two goats if its a baby boy or a one goat if its a baby girl and it is recommended to to perform Aqeeqah before the 7th day of child birth. According to a Hadith:
“Every child is in pledge for its ‘Aqeeqah which is sacrificed for it on its seventh day, and it is named on it, and its head is shaved” (Abu Dawood).
5. Shaving His or Her head
It is compulsory to shave the head of the baby boy or a baby girl on along with Aqeeqah on the 7th day since the child birth. This practice is desirable for all Muslims. When Al-Hasan (RA) was born, the Prophet (PBUH) told his daughter, Fatima (RA):
“Shave his head and give the weight of his hair in silver to the poor.”(Ahmad)
Circumcision is also another important Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) and is advisable to do it on the 7th day since child birth. It is reported that Prophet (P.B.U.H) had gotten circumcision of Hassan (RA) and Hussain (RA) on the 7th day.
