We as Muslims should always be devoted to our parents because they are the ones who have been with us through almost each and everything in our lives. Respecting and treating them with kindness is one of the most significant aspects of the Islamic religion.

There are many verses in the Holy Quran where showing kindness towards parents is mentioned along the very important aspect of Islam that is worshiping Allah (SWT) alone. Allah (SWT) says in the Quran:

“Your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him and that you be kind to parents. Whether one or both of them attain old age in your life, say not to them a word of contempt, nor repel them, but address them in terms of honor.“ (Quran, 17:23)

Allah (SWT) also says in Quran:

“The best of deeds or deed is (the observance) of prayer at its proper time and kindness towards parents.”

According to the above mentioned verse, it is clear that no word of disrespect should be uttered towards parents in any circumstances. Honouring the parents and respecting them in every way is considered a form of worship if the intention is to please Allah (SWT) by respecting what He commands. Allah (SWT) commands us to show humility, respect and kindness towards our parents.

Allah (SWT) in the Holy Quran clearly links the rights owed to him with the rights owed to the parents. Allah (SWT) says in the Quran:

“And We have enjoined on man (to be dutiful and good) to his parents.  His mother bore him in weakness and hardship upon weakness and hardship, and his weaning is in two years give thanks to Me and to your parents, unto Me is the final destination.”  (Quran 31:14)

The last messenger of Allah (SWT), Holy Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) reinforced the duty of being kind towards parents in every way. Once the companion of Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) came to him and asked him which of the many good deeds a man can do which is most loved by Allah (SWT) The Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) said:

“To offer the prayer in its proper time”.  The companion then asked, “And what is next?” to which Prophet Muhammad replied, “To be good and dutiful to your parents…” (Bukhari)

It is obligatory for children to take care of their parents and show humility and kindness towards them by showing qualities of bir and knowing the reward of such act is with Allah (SWT). The Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) said in one of his Hadith:

“If anyone possesses these three characteristics God will give him an easy death and bring him into His Paradise: gentleness towards the weak, affection towards parents, and kindness to slaves.” (Tirmidhi)
